We are delighted to announce that the Bird in Hand pub is now open again, following a refurb to the interior and something of a make-under to our front facade.
The pub, which has been in situ for some 200 years, will serve as Forest Hill’s new community local with a few nods to our history as well as taking on a slightly new form.
On the hand pulls we have Volden Session and Carling at £3.50 a pint (W*****spoons eat your heart out) and a selection from local breweries on the taps. Our wine menu includes our house wines at £16 a bottle.
We are truly excited to be operating in SE23 once more, and we want to ensure we are a valuable part of our community with something for everyone to enjoy and a place to make memories.

On a return visit to a pub that hadn’t the best reputation, was gladly surprised to find out it had changed hands. Peter was a great host and ensured that my friends and I had a great time. Looking forward to the new management.
Harry and Lilian were fantastic, both very polite and outgoing! Also had a great atmosphere to the newly taken over pub! Looking forward to what’s going to be done with the venue in the new year! Be sure to come down!
Currently a bit confused by this place. The pub itself is nicely finished inside, if a little bland. Good selection of ales and beers. Decent background music, not too loud. Visited on a Tues evening and the place was near enough deserted. Bar staff were sitting around the corner in a side room on their phones. Probably fair enough as they must have been bored to tears. So waited for someone to spot us and then come out to serve. My friend had a similar issue getting served. Not great in an empty pub. Anyhow, this was a Tues to the no atmosphere vibe was forgivable. My wife visited with her friends on Friday evening, turning up at 10:15 PM. Again, the place was near deserted and they had already called last orders. On a Friday eve! Has potential to be a pleasant pub, but there is fundamentally something wrong currently. Will try again in a few weeks and see if its changed.
Never leave reviews but want to say how much I love what the new management have done with this pub. Used to be one to be avoided, but now has great music, good selection of beer (including one of my favourite natural wines, Solara - what an unexpected win!!), lovely staff, and loads of places where you can settle in for a chat. Can’t wait for the kitchen to open as this’ll be a great place for a Sunday lunch in the autumn, I reckon. I know some of the old regulars will be upset but I’m so glad that we finally have a proper, good quality pub in Forest Hill! Pub quiz next please?
Will be lovely once finished. A whole area taped off. The bar is a little short. Customers sitting in front of the bar with ample tables. It's not good and not very welcoming as you can't get to order drinks. The bit of the bar not blocked by sitted customers had a customer talking to a member of staff with the sausage rolls uncovered underneath them. There were two flies around. H&S nightmare! No disabled toilets and part of the sitting area, it's not accessible for people with disabilities. Photos attached to prove the comments.
