The best place for a crisp pint. Great place to chill out, play pool and feel welcome. Get treated like family

Went for the first time as they had karaoke on and hubbie does like a karaoke. I am on crutches and I don't like going to places I don't know, but from the moment we arrived I was made to feel welcome; a woman who was going through the door, saw us heading over, so she stepped back to hold the door open, the bar staff were friendly and several of the people there said hello or smiled as we headed to the bar. The karaoke was really good (I do NOT sing - ever) but hubbie enjoyed it and I enjoyed watching and listening to new people who were all really good. If you want a traditional, welcoming pub, and a great karaoke on a Saturday night, then give Whelan's a go.

Solid community pub at the beating heart of Surrey Quays with a fantastic atmosphere and amazing bar staff and landlord who look after regulars and newcomers alike. Karaoke nights on Saturdays are great fun. Loving the outside seating area.

🚇 Surrey Quays 🍺 £5.00 Fosters and a packet of crisps ❤️ A no frills locals pub which gets lively on Millwall match days. . Whelan’s is easy to get to and is just a minute walk from Surrey Quays overground station, Canada Water is a ten minute walk if you take the Tube. . This pub was built in 1869 and is quite simple in appearance. This independent Freehouse could do with a lick of paint but for most independent pubs right know survival is a priority meaning paint jobs and upgrades are put on the back burner for now. . The decor here is traditional with an quirky colour scheme. The first thing I noticed as I walked in were the walls which are painted bright blue and green. Around the walls are lots of football shirts and a street sign for Old Blow Lane, a salute to Millwall’s previous stadium The Old Den which was Millwall’s home for 83 years. This is a small pub but it manages to shoehorn in a pool table at the rear of the bar, there are also a few screens dotted around the pub showing live sport. There is a covered outside space at the side of the pub. . The beer choice was limited, I ordered a pint of Fosters from the friendly fella working behind the bar, my pint was decent enough even though it’s not my favourite. There is a £5 minimum spend on card payments so I had a packet of crisps aswell to top it up to a fiver, there is no food on offer here. . I arrived just after 4pm on a Saturday afternoon back in July and the pub was fairly busy with a dozen or so local punters in attendance. Whelan’s gets busy with Millwall fans on match days, so I decided to visit out of football season to get a true sense of what this pub is all about. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, I had a chat with one of the regulars at the bar, he was a top fella and very knowledgeable of pubs in the area. . Whelan’s is a proper no nonsense boozer which looks after its punters. I really enjoyed my visit here and chatting to one of the regulars about the pubs around the area. You’re probably not going to take you other half here on date night, but if like me you like a bit of old school pubbing, stick Whelan’s on your list. . 📊 Information correct on visiting 16/07/22
