    Avoid this establishment.

A very disappointing visit! The staff member on duty(?) was very unhelpful when we asked for a menu. The Landlord was more interested in talking about golf with his friend than helping the barmaid. What a shame. Ideal location to be a true winner both for the local Hangleton residents and visitors to the area as it is very near the end of the track running up to Devils Dyke. The current Landlord seems very unimaginative. The food was good, but sadly let down by the ambiance and VERY high prices considering it’s location (we pay less in the centre of Hove). Our advice would be to go to The Hangleton Manor or for a more rough and ready, but reasonably priced venue, The Grenadier.

Traditional, family run pub. Excellent food!!

I have used this pub for the last few years, even though it is not my local, mainly because of the excellent food available. The bar menu has traditional pub fayre such as ploughmans, ham and eggs and huge baguettes which are a meal in themself.
They also offer a "Specials Board" which are all great portions, great value and obviously home cooked, not your usual frozen food manufacturer "specials" that are offered at the Grendadier or Hangleton Manor.
The drinks are similarly priced to other pubs in the area that are not part of the large chains like the horrible "Weatherspoons" and the gardens and pub itself are always well kept, clean and tidy.
One point I think they could improve on is the lack of Functions or Entertainment, the garden lends itself to Family Barbecue days and a monthly music or quiz night would improve on the ambience of the pub, after all these are the things that are more likely to entice people into a pub in these recession times.
Overall if your looking for great value for money food and great Sunday Roasts then you can do no better in the Hangleton area than "The Downsman" I would recommend it to all.
