About us

The mining community of Chester Moor has been in need of refreshment since the first colliery opened in 1889, with over 700 men and boys working in the pits by 1940. Following the closure of the final colliery in the 1960's, The Church Mouse now welcomes locals and travellers making the journey between Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham and Sunderland.

A country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character, our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

Whether you are planning dinner with friends or Sunday lunch with family, book a table online and enjoy some quality time with those you love the most.

I have passed the place loads of times, but this time, I decided to stop. So pleased I did. What a lovely place, well furnished with log fires at either end. Relaxing atmosphere with friendly and helpful staff. The food is top quality and a variety of options. Would definitely recommend it here and will certainly be back for more.

This is the 6th year we have visited The Church Mouse with friends for a Christmas lunch and it was lovely again. We had 2 courses from the festive menu and the food was delicious 3 of us had the turkey dinner and I had the pork belly, we ordered sides as well and everything was spot on, we then ordered desserts and could hardly move. We had Matthew looking after us and he was lovely, very attentive and polite, he is a credit to the team and how he is there when we go again next year.

Excellent Customer Service from entering the Church Mouse from Jonathon, Very friendly and helpful. Our server was Tracey who was also very friendly. Food was really good & my husband remarked on how his food was piping hot. We will definitely be returning especially for the Customer Service.

A wonderful atmosphere, it was very busy and I totally understand why , food was lovely piping hot I had my usual char grilled chicken and chips the beauty is you can build your perfect burger. My husband ordered a starter of the garlic flat bread it was huge and for main he had kedgeree fish cakes and he said they had a little kick but they were delicious. Our brother and sister in law had the steak and his partner had the lasagne, all our meals were piping hot .Will we be returning most definitely. The staff were lovely and friendly.

I like this place, for the cosy atmosphere, very nice interrior and friendly service. And come here often. However, this time the food was slightly disappointing. Look at the photo, it is just a small portion of belly, which was a bit hard to chew on. I wasn't left hungry though, because there were potatoes, vegetables, etc. 2 huge carrots impressive but not very attractive, a bit funny. But why is it all so expensive at £17?
