About us

An 18th Century map suggests The Red Lion was established as far back as 1737, though then it was known as "The Red Lyon". Our quiet and peaceful history was interrupted in the autumn of 1845 when the inn became the scene of a battle between angry Irish and English farm labourers. More recently, we have won a Gold Award at the Chester Food and Drink Festival Awards 2007 and 2008.

A country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character, our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

Whether you are planning dinner with friends or Sunday lunch with family, book a table online and enjoy some quality time with those you love the most.

Came here off the back of reviews. Sunday 07/01/24. Setting was nice and had a good atmosphere and based on other reviews and because I'm not one to usually complain, I'll give 4 stars. I probably should have given 3. The food was neither here or there. I'm not sure if it had been a busy afternoon and staff were tired, but service was slow. To the point where I wasn't sure if I needed to go to the bar to order, having waited around 20 minutes to have anyone come to the table. Made aware there was no turkey on the Sunday lunch menu to begin with, which then turned into no Sunday lunch menu at all! Wife and youngest had fish and chips. A little over cooked and dry and no tartare sauce on offer. My daughter's signature burger looked good! I had chicken, bacon, cheese, which was fine, but probably not quite for the price. All in all, I don't think I'll return after spending £140 on the evening.

Had a fantastic meal here today celebrating my Mum's 70th birthday. The pub itself is welcoming and nice inside, but what made it for us was the staff. Sue in particular was so lovely and helpful. I have several food allergies and she was so patient with me. The service was fab. Now, the food...what can I say? Excellent!! Tasty, presented well, hot, and top quality. Full bellies all around. Oh and the banofee pie is to die for. Will definitely be back.

Went for lunch today, 4 adults + child. Menu very good, lots of lovely choices. Vegetarian option excellent 👍. Generous portions of food, well presented, hot and very tasty! Child's meal was also an appropriate portion size and very much enjoyed. The staff were all friendly and the service excellent despite the place being busy. Pleasant atmosphere and lovely surroundings. Will definitely be back 😁

Visiting Chester for a week. Found a cottage in Dodleston. What an amazing village but the absolute gem was The Red Lion. We drank there a couple of night and loved the atmosphere. But on the last night of our stay we booked a table for 5 adults and my 20 month Grandson. Well the whole experience was spectacular. All the food was incredible and the 5 star service we got from Rachel and Sue was the best that I can remember. Nothing was too much trouble and they made our visit one to remember. Many thanks Martin Beaver
