The food was absolutely magnificent! It is amazingly priced, traditional fare. The service was above board, anticipated our drinks before we knew we needed them... Magic!
I have a relative in the care home nearby and chose to eat here, as I’d read reviews saying it was dog friendly. With friendly locals. Having over a 2 hour journey, each way, it seemed a perfect way to enjoy a visit taking him out to lunch. So I reserved a table with the inclusion of 2 dogs. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Seated us in the dining area. The food and service was excellent. Our dogs were a little excited as others joined and left the pub. I think the owner had a dog similar to ours, so there were doggy exchanges as they left and returned to the pub. It’s small and we were near an entrance. After our meal, on using toilet amenities, we overheard ‘regulars’ sat at the bar, discussing our dogs. Saying they should be taking outside and tied up. It was raining! At one point a guy said he’d kick them if they didn’t shut up. This lead to a few choice words between us. We’d spent a reasonable amount of money on food and drink, as a party of 5, while they sat nursing beers. There was no tv or event, and our dogs weren’t overly noisy. We were in the pub less than 2 hours! I found the atmosphere unfriendly and would only return if the weather allowed for outside seating. The staff apologised to us, but it did spoil the end of our first visit to our relative.
Genuine local boozer, serving good beer and food at reasonable prices. It deserved to have more customers last Saturday night when we visited with friends, maybe Strictly kept people in. They missed out on a gem of a pub, for sure, hope trade picks up, otherwise yet another good old proper English pub will be lost.
We went for Sunday lunch and highly recommend the roast lamb. The fish and chips were also quite good. It would be great to see some more vegetarian/vegan options across the menu as they were quite lacking which is a shame. The tapas menu looks great, and is served Monday to Saturday. Roast dinners only on Sunday!
This pub is a proper time warp... It feels a bit like a good old pub from 30 years ago in a nice way. Rough and ready but not without its own charm. Food looked and smelled wonderful, football was on and the locals were happy to chat to our group. It was is small inside and very cosy. We visited in winter but in the summer it is a floral delight apparently with baskets everywhere.
